At first glance, humans seem to have very little in common with Cassiopea, a primitive jellyfish. Cassiopea is brainless, spineless, and spends essentially its entire life sitting upside down on the ocean floor, pulsating every few seconds. However, Caltech scientists have now discovered that, as different as our daily schedules may seem, humans and jellyfish actually start and end their days with the same behavior: sleep. ----. Though this work demonstrates that jellyfish exhibit sleep behavior, the genetic mechanisms that underlie sleep remain unknown.

(I) Today, building batteries requires multiple steps. (II) First, two separate machines fabricate electrodes by spreading pastelike layers of energy-storing materials on sheets of metal. (III) After those sheets are dried and compressed, they are cut to size and sandwiched around a plastic separator to prevent electrical shortages. (IV) Last, the battery is packaged in a nonconductive material and filled with a liquid electrolyte that can carry charge between the electrodes. (V) The prototype batteries perform as well as batteries made with the conventional process and the same materials.

Today Mars is dry, cold and barren. But once upon a time, Mars was wet, possibly warm and could even have been home to microbial life. In 2004, NASA landed two robotic rovers on Mars, and found conclusive evidence that water once ran on Mars’ surface. What scientists wanted to know next was whether this water contributed to an environment that could support life, so they sent another rover, the largest ever sent into space, to answer that question. This rover called Curiosity is controlled by engineers back on Earth, whose commands can take up to 20 minutes to travel to Mars. Curiosity’s computer brain uses a software called AEGIS to identify objects of interest and to avoid hazards, such as steep slopes or ditches, without scientists on Earth interfering. The rover has 17 eyes, which help Curiosity judge the distance to obstacles in its way. These technological innovations help support the rover’s scientific goals which include finding the chemical building blocks of life, investigating the mineralogy of the Martian surface and measuring radiation in the atmosphere, all unknown to us.

Ozone, a form of oxygen, occurs naturally in the Earth’s upper atmosphere where it forms a layer that prevents some ultraviolet solar radiation from striking the Earth. If this atmospheric ozone were to become less dense, more ultraviolet rays would reach the Earth, possibly damaging crops and perhaps leading to increased incidence of human skin cancer. During the 1970s some scientists concluded that ozone concentrations were slowly lessening. They said that chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) from aerosol and other sources are rising to the upper atmosphere and being decomposed there by ultraviolet light. This action frees a chlorine atom that reacts with ozone to form new compounds. Theoretically, atmospheric ozone is diminished by this process. These findings received wide publicity, and in 1978, the US government banned CFC aerosol in most products. Two years later, the US announced its intention first to halt the growth of CFC production in all products and then to curtail production sharply. However, the aerosol industry declared that the ozone depletion theory is questionable and sale of the products with aerosol should continue. By the end of 1981, only Canada, Sweden, and Norway had joined the US in banning CFC aerosols.

The atomic bomb, which was developed secretly in the United States during World War II (WWII), differed from all earlier types of bombs. It contained radioactive substances that underwent very rapid changes under certain conditions, releasing immense quantities of light and heat. For an atomic bomb explosion, its radioactive constituents, largely an isotope of uranium called U-235 must be present in sufficient quantity, called a critical mass. The exact details of the bomb’s construction remain secret, but it probably contains two quantities of radioactive material that are brought together mechanically to form a critical mass and thus to explode. The other main type of nuclear bomb is hydrogen bomb, which is far more powerful than an atomic bomb, using isotopes of hydrogen. Ever since the development of hydrogen bombs in the 1950s, even scientists from other nations have made them smaller, improved their triggering mechanism and increased notably their explosive power, making it 45000 times as powerful as the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. In a future war, a hydrogen bomb would presumably be delivered to its target as the nuclear warhead of a guided missile.

In terms of the number of tornadoes in Europe, July is the peak month in Austria, Finland, and Germany. Whereas in the US, on average, there are around 294 tornadoes during the month of May, and as many as 543 tornadoes have been reported in the month of May alone (in 2003). The months with the fewest tornadoes are usually December and January, although major tornado outbreaks can and sometimes do occur even in those months. In general, in the Midwestern and Plains states, springtime (especially the month of May) is the most active season for tornadoes, while in the far northern states (like Minnesota and Wisconsin), the peak tornado season is usually in the summer months (June and July). In the colder late autumn and winter months (from early December to late February), tornado activity is generally limited to the southern states, where it is possible for warm Gulf of Mexico air to penetrate.

The 60 members of the UCLG committee evaluate urban development strategies and debate these experiences to make the best recommendations. Additionally, the UCLG accounts for differences in regional and national context. All the organizations are making a great effort to promote this concept by media and internet, and in conferences and workshops.
